The Space goes to George Jackson Academy’s Community Service Day

Last month, the lovely people at George Jackson Academy, an all boys’ school on the Saint Mark’s Place, approached The Space At Tompkins to come into the school on their Community Service Day. Storage cart in tow, we arrived at the school with supplies to create care packages—socks, paper bags, underwear.

First we gave an explanation of our mission and work; a presentation to which these attentive students championed through. Then came the fun part: sorting our underwear donations by size and gender. The boys got an opportunity to basketball-toss these supplies into different bins. Next they wrote nice notecards with positive and encouraging messages to complete the care-bags along with the socks and underwear.

Overall we were pleasantly surprised by the genuine interest and enthusiasm of these middle-school aged boys! They asked great questions and were happy to participate in our cause. The school donated peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and other lunch food items to us. Many people from the transient and homeless community have benefited from these packages. It was a great experience for all!
